Winnipeg For Lunch - K & W Grocery

More Bánh mì!

K & W Grocery is a place I've eaten at but never been. I wasn't sure about that until I bit into the Bánh mì but I was confident an old co-worker picked these up from time to time, yet I never went with him and could never remember where he got them from. Enter Kevin , who once again knows a fantastic lunch joint.

You have a few Bánh mì options: K & W Special ($3.25), Meatball ($2.80), Fried Fish Paste ($3.75), Grilled Pork ($3.75), and Pulled Chicken ($3.75). If for some reason you didn't want Bánh mì and just wanted a Sub To Go it is $3.33. But get a Bánh mì.

We went for a late Friday lunch, so it wasn't too busy, or busy at all. By the time we decided what we wanted, the K & W Special, and spoke a few words about the place being a hole in the wall gem, our meals were ready.

Now I could definitely see the speed of the lunch coming out slower once it is a bit busier but considering it took all of maybe two minutes to place an order, have it made, pay, and start eating. That is faster than the fastest Subway or Quiznos with more flavour and half the cost.

This bun has a lot going on for it - soft and chewy, crusty, and messy. I had crumbs all over me (and Kevin's car), but then again I am a messy eater in general. A lot of flavours going on stuffed in that 8-inch baguette. Packed with carrots, cucumber, cilantro, pork, daikon radish, and chili peppers (we asked for 3 on ours) the distinctly different textures and flavours combine for a gorgeous balance of everything you could ask for - sweet, spicy, crunchy.

If the Bánh mì I had at Fong Ying was traditional but had its faults, the Bánh mì at K & W is as traditional and yummy as it gets. This basically is as good as you are going to get for lunch at that price.

Taste : 9/10
Speed : 5/5
Price : 5/5
Overall : 19/20
