Péché Mortel

One of my favourite stouts

Beer : Péché Mortel
Brewery : Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel
Brewed In : Quebec, Canada
Style : Imperial Stout
ABV : 9.5%
Price : I honestly don’t recall.  The six pack was around $14 I believe.
Notes : Rotating availability.
Story : On my road trip to Edmonton I made sure to stock up on Dieu DU Ciel beers.  This was one of the six packs I grabbed.

Appearance : This just looks thick as it pours.  It is a dark, dark brown, which reminds me of heavy syrup.  The head is very thick as well and is a deep tan colour.  So far this beer looks like my kind of beer.

Smell : The nose doesn’t disappoint, with thick molasses and dark fruits that are very robust compared to the slight coffee scent that accompanies this beer.

Taste : Péché Mortel has a quick bitter bite of chocolate and espresso before the roasted coffee and powdered chocolate become very prominent, there is also a heat from the 9.5% ABV following them up closely before the finish brings out more of the espresso.

Mouthfeel : The body is much lighter than I imagined from the initial pour that made it look like syrup.  A bit of cloying accompanies this beer too.

Drinkability : I would definitely drink this beer again.  Probably would pair well sitting beside a fireplace in the winter while sitting under a blanket.  Kind of wish I grabbed more then one six pack.  We also recorded an episode of Pub Chat with Mitch where we review this beer.

Top Gun - NASA

How I spend an hour with Brennan

This is what happens when Brennan Lumsdon and I get together.  The plan was to film something.  We had no idea what to film.  We shot ideas back and forth - coming up with nothing.  After a walk through the snowy park, which still led to no inspiration we decided to film a quick skit I mentioned to Brennan to do with Michael Bay.

This is what came of that skit. Top Gun - NASA .  The sequel to Top Gun if NASA decided to have a Top Gun program.

Writers : Colin Enquist, Brennan Lumsdon

Green Onion Cakes

A dish I brought home from Edmonton

Until I moved to Edmonton I had never heard of green onion cakes.  To be honest, I was a bit skeptical on them at first.  Then I tried them at Edmonton Fringe one day.  I was instantly hooked.

It took me a while before I ever made them myself but after I did I realized they're real easy to make.  Been making them ever since.  Although I think this is the first time I have made them in almost a year I figured I should post the recipe.

You don't need much for this recipe.  Flour, water, salt, green onions, and some vegetable oil.

Ingredients :

3 cups of flour
1 1/4 water
salt
pepper
a good handful of green onions (at least 10 stalks)
vegetable oil

First thing is pour yourself a beer.  The process is simple but it takes about an hour for a batch.
Put the flour in a mixing bowl.
Boil water and pour into the flour.
Mix up for a few minutes until, well, mixed.  Then cover and let sit for 30 minutes.
Portion into even size balls.  Should get about 10-16 depending on the size you're looking for.
Roll out with rolling pin, brush lightly with oil, and sprinkle on salt and pepper..
Cut green onions if you haven't already.
Place a handful on top.
Roll up dough like a cigar and then make it doughnut shaped.
Roll again with rolling pin and place aside.
Put a couple tablespoons of oil in pan and heat up.  Place patty in oil.
Flip at a minute or two.  When golden.
I place on paper towel to get absorb excess oil.
Cut up and serve with hot sauce.

The Great Burger Hunt - Super Boys

Where a messy burger awaits you

Short one this month!  Made a quick stop, during the summer, at Super Boys on Main, which I’ve heard about and it has been around for more than 20 years but I’ve never got down to trying it.  Luckily a friend decided to take me here for dinner one night before we hung out that evening!  Thanks Kevin – not the one I normally talk about on here either – the other one!

Anyway.  Kevin and I walked into the small shop.  I already knew what I was getting, a fat boy, sorry, a Super Boy.  It was $8.50 for a Super Boy and fries – how could I go wrong?  The menu was decent considering they had the usual array of burgers, dogs, salads, nuggets, gyros, and poutine.  Plus they serve ice cream.

The food came out pretty quickly considering how busy they were.  You could tell that Super Boys has a good reputation in the neighborhood because the foot traffic was flowing in and out at a pretty hectic pace.

Because the food came out so quick I burnt my tongue on the piping hot fries.  When will I learn?  The fries didn’t have much salt or spice to them but they were soft on the inside and nice and crispy on the outside.

The burger itself was messy as fuck!  Seriously this it the messiest burger I’ve eaten in, well probably ever.  I should have taken a picture of the aftermath.  The lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, chili, and entirely too much mayo were falling all over the place.  Aside from the tomatoes, which were not really ripe, the burger was juicy and very appetizing.

Super Boys is a must visit for the burgers but do as Kevin says, ”bring a few napkins, and bring cash,” as they don’t take plastic.

What I got : Super Boy and fries -  $8.50 (after taxes)

Burger Taste : 4/5
Fries Taste : 3/5
Menu Selection : 3/5
Price Value : 4/5
Overall : 3.5/5

Loki

Strong hop flavours but not

Beer : Loki
Brewed In : Saskatchewan, Canada
Style : Douple IPA
ABV : 8.7%
Price : Another gift from Stephen
Notes : Rotating availability
Story : Came in that 6-pack from Stephen.  Was really looking forward to trying this one almost as much as the Barrel Full of Monkey’s.

Appearance : Paddock Wood’s Loki was given a harsh pour into my tulip glass, so the head on this copper beer is much bigger than normal I would imagine.  That being said, the head is white, thick, and left a ton of lacing.

Smell : I could smell the hops as soon as I poured the beer, and my head was still a few feet away.  All I get from the aroma is grapefruit.  After the initial blast of hops though the aroma really wasn’t as potent as I anticipated.

Taste : Citrus is the biggest portion of the flavour.  You notice the grapefruit more than anything else, but there are grassy and pine notes.  For a beer with this much hop related flavours it really is not that bitter or strong, which isn’t a bad thing.

Mouthfeel : Medium bodied and a bit dry in the finish.

Drinkability : I could drink tons of these, although at 8.7% that probably wouldn’t be my smartest idea.  This is one of those IPA’s that may not be a wallop of hops but it sure is smooth and tasty.

Burton Baton

This is so delicious

Beer : Burton Baton
Brewery : Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Brewed In : Delaware, United States
Style : Imperial IPA
ABV : 10%
Price : Part of a trade with George is how I got this bottle
Notes : Brewed year-round (which is unreal to me).
Story : They recommend you bury your bottle of Burton Baton in the ground to let it age.  I just put it on the shelf with the other beers.  This beer is actually an English-style old ale and an Imperial IPA blended together and aged in Dogfish Head’s large oak tanks for about a month.

Appearance : Burton Baton pours an oak brown with minimal off white head.  What little head was there stuck around for the entire beer though.

Smell : Lots of woody, oak, vanilla, and boozy aromas.

Taste : Very oaky and boozy with a hint of creaminess in the middle before the citrus and pine hops give it a nice kick in the finish.

Mouthfeel : Creamy and full bodied.  Got some good alcohol legs on the swirl.

Drinkability : I really wish Dogfish Head could ship to Winnipeg.  I really do enjoy their beers and I do not get enough of them.
Thanks George!
