The Great Burger Hunt - Pop's Burgers

Another new old place

Way back when I started The Great Burger Hunt, I knew I was going to review a local St James burger joint, Red Boot . It was one of the first dozen I reviewed, but sadly after an ownership change, it closed down. Even more sad, Karvy’s are no longer available.

Now a new burger place stands in its place – Pop’s Burgers .

Brett , James , and I went on a nice cold day to get our burger fix.

Walking in the tiny place nothing had really changed other than the new name. The colours were still the same red.

A quick look at the menu I knew I was getting the Pop’s Burger, which is a two patty, two

bacon slices, two cheese slices monster. It also includes chilli, onions, mustard, pickles, mayo, cheese, and tomato. All for a decent price of $7.75.

I added on the regular fries for $3.10. More on these in a moment.

The menu is typical burger joint menu with a few exceptions. Pop’s has fatboy’s, veggie, fish, greek, chilli, and chicken burgers. Albeit the chicken burger is a bit pricier ($6.50), but the fish and Greek are much cheaper ($4.50). They also have a selection of hot dogs, sandwiches, pitas, and salads. Not to mention banana splits, sundaes, and twisters. Oh, and onion rings, poutine, and fish/chicken fingers and chips.

Shit ton of fries....
I think a reason the new place will be successful will be their combos. All well priced for the amount of food you get, which all include a drink.

It didn’t take long for our orders to come out. We took them home, but you can eat inside, although they only have a handful of barstool chairs. It is more of an eat in place during the summer when you can take advantage of their picnic tables.

The fries were much skinnier then expected. They weren’t too salty and my initial reaction was positive. I really enjoyed them, even as they cooled down I quite liked them. There will never be a need for someone to order a large fries for themselves from Pop’s. Seriously the portion was huge.

Pop’s burger is essentially a double fatboy, with extra bacon and cheese. The burger had a subdued spice. Like most places it was on the side of a slightly soggy bun, but was fairly fresh and tasty. Everything went well together, nothing overpowered another ingredient. I was surprised by the amount of chilli they put on, which wasn't a lot. Considering I just polished off this burger and only had like twenty fries before it I could have stopped eating and be full. But I was going to try to put a dent in the fries.

Nope. A dent in the fries did not exist when I finished. Or two hours later when I was still slowly munching on them.

Currently they have a special, where you buy two fatboys and get a third free. You should probably take advantage of that with some friends.

Pops burger a bit pricy at points but a lot of it is priced rather well overall, and the regular fatboy combo is a great deal ($6.70).

My only nitpick of the new place is the menu could have a bit of description on what exactly they put on burgers. It wasn’t an issue with me asking but I noticed they have all the toppings on the take out menu, not the order at the front counter menu.

I will be back, and you should probably check out Pop’s. They are open Monday to Saturday 11AM to 7PM.

3Beans

Breakfast beer
Beer : 3Beans
Brewery : Sixpoint Brewery
Brewed In : New York, USA
Style : Baltic Porter
ABV : 10%
Price : Don't recall.
Notes : Beer advocate says it was brewed once.  Colour me heartbroken.
Story : I picked up a couple cans in Chicago, which we drank down there.  Luckily Ameya had traded me one of these in our beer swap.

Appearance : Pours a dark brown and when held to the light a tinge of red can be seen.  The head is light beige and thick.

Smell : Compared to the flavour the nose is rather subdued.  Still mostly coffee you do get a bit of sugar and dark fruits.

Taste : Strong, very strong, coffee and espresso flavours.  This is the perfect breakfast beer.  It is a bit boozy and has a good amount of chocolate.  I did not realize it was 10% the first time I had it.  In the morning.  For breakfast.

Mouthfeel : Full bodied and rich.

Drinkability : I want more of this.  Badly.
