Red Top has been around for some time. They really are a staple (since the 60s I believe the menu said) in the Winnipeg burger scene. I think they always get left out when it comes to the discussion of great burger joints in the city. Sure they'd be lower on the list, but in the discussion for sure. One thing for sure they are always consistent on how good the food is.
This was actually the second time I stepped foot in Red Top with the intention of reviewing it. The first time I tackled the Monster Burger.
But I basically had a heart attack (not really) so that review never happened. The Monster Burger is a 6-patty monster, which is surprisingly tasty and easy to eat considering the size.
The second time I went back. I was a bit more health oriented and only got a Lot-O-Burger, with the exception of the bacon I added. James got the same thing. Both of us got the side of fries, which also came with coleslaw (the healthy part?).
They do have a liquor license but I just stuck with water (maybe the real healthy part of my meal).
The menu at Red Top is rather deep. Burgers of all kinds. Many different sides. Plus an array of other
types of food.
Red Top is a classic diner style with some of the friendliest staff I've ever come across. It didn't take them long to crank out our food.
James was instantly happy his burger had mustard on it. It smelled amazing. The positives of the burger were the patty itself and the chili have so much flavour. The negatives was the bun was too thick and they had a bit too many onions on the burger. I know I said they were consistent and I stand by that, considering the amount of times I've been to Red Top, this was the first time I thought there was too many onions.
When it comes to fries they do them well. Always a great texture and were piping hot. Lack of salt is a bit off putting, making them seem bland, but it's better to add your own than have them over salted.
I owed James for this one. So I ended up with the bill. Didn't cost me too much, an average cost for burger joints in my opinion, $22.25 for both meals.
What I got : Lot-o-burger and fries x2: $22.25 (after taxes).
